Relational Approach

At Coombe House, relationships are central, fostering trust, understanding, and safety to support every child’s growth.

Relationships at the Heart of Everything

At Coombe House, relationships are at the heart of everything we do.

We know that many of our pupils have experienced challenges in education, and some may have lost trust in schools, learning or the adults around them. Before meaningful progress can begin, young people need to feel understood, accepted and safe.

Our relational approach provides the foundation for all aspects of school life, shaping how teachers, support staff, therapists, leaders and families work together to support each child.

Understanding Before Judgement

We seek to understand before we seek to change. When a young person is struggling, our starting point is not to ask:
“How do we stop this behaviour?”

Instead, we ask:
“What is behind this presentation?”
“What has happened to this child?”
“What support do they need right now?”

We recognise that behaviour, anxiety and disengagement often have deeper causes. By taking time to understand each pupil’s experiences, strengths and needs, we are better able to provide the support that helps them move forward.

Acceptance and Ambition

We believe that acceptance and ambition belong together.

We accept young people for where they are today, without judgement and without expecting them to hide the challenges they may be experiencing.

At the same time, we remain ambitious for their future.

Accepting a child’s current presentation does not mean lowering expectations. It means starting from the reality of where they are and building a pathway towards where they could become.

Building Trust

Strong relationships are built through trust.

For many pupils, learning to trust adults again can take time. Through consistent experiences of connection, kindness, understanding and care, pupils begin to feel safe enough to ask for help, take risks and engage more fully with school life.

Over time, trust helps reduce anxiety and creates opportunities for growth.

The first signs of progress are often not seen in data or qualifications. They may be seen in laughter, conversation, confidence, belonging and a willingness to try something new.

One Culture, Not One Technique

Our relational approach is not a programme, script or intervention.

It is a culture.

Every adult at Coombe House shares the same values and commitment to understanding children as individuals. Whilst different professionals bring different expertise, they work within a common framework built on kindness, belonging and ambition.

This does not mean every child receives the same response. In fact, the opposite is true.

We understand that there is no single approach that works for all young people. Instead, we use our collective knowledge, experience and specialist expertise to identify the strategies most likely to support each individual child.

Why Relationships Matter

The goal of our relational approach is not simply to help children feel better.

Relationships create the conditions for learning, growth and change.

When young people feel safe, understood and connected, they become more willing to take risks, engage with learning, develop confidence and build positive relationships with others.

Many families tell us that these changes extend well beyond school. They notice reduced anxiety, improved wellbeing, stronger family relationships and a growing belief in the future.

Ultimately, our aim is simple: To help every young person feel seen, understood and valued, so that they can thrive in school and beyond.
